Introducing Working Groups: Building GenLayer Together

GenLayer’s Working Groups is a new initiative to organise and align the development effort and roadmap of GenLayer between the GenLayer Foundation, GenLayer Labs and the broader GenLayer Ecosystem. This initiative represents a significant step forward in how we collaborate and build GenLayer in together.

Our Vision

Working Groups will help us achieve critical objectives for GenLayer’s future:

Decentralisation: GenLayer started as a GenLayer Labs idea and execution. Then came the Foundation, and now we are inviting Validators, Partners, Builders, and Researchers to join our effort in creating the best GenLayer possible. Building together in public is a big part of our ethos.

Alignment: Current members of the ecosystem struggle when trying to help GenLayer in a meaningful way that furthers the roadmap. With Working Groups, we aim to prioritise impactful projects where members of Labs, Foundation, and the Ecosystem come together to develop and research, helping the critical path to Mainnet and making GenLayer leap forward with each contribution.

In-depth GenLayer Expertise: By splitting GenLayer members into separate groups, parts of the Ecosystem can specialize and deepen their knowledge about GenLayer in a vertical way. It’s crucial that the Ecosystem learns the ins-and-outs of GenLayer to maximise its possibilities. As each group dives into a technical topic, there are more eyes to discuss and come up with the best and most elegant solutions. GenLayer has expert members of the community in different fields who can provide invaluable advice and direction that can only be learned through experience.

Direct Access to Core Team: Working Group members gain direct contact with GenLayer Labs core team members working in their specific system. This unprecedented access allows for real-time technical discussions, immediate feedback on proposals, and collaborative problem-solving with the engineers and researchers who are building GenLayer’s foundation.

Why Working Groups?

We’ve design our incentivised Testnet Program with the idea of opening up many more areas to the community. We’re evolving the structure by creating specialised Working Groups focused on key areas where we need expertise and contributions.

The aim is to:

  • Better organise our collective efforts

  • Avoid duplicate work

  • Focus on what’s truly important for GenLayer’s growth

  • Open up the discussion and decision-making process to the broader ecosystem

We believe the best solutions come from those actively engaged with our community.

Structure and Process

Each Working Group follows a structured approach:

Member Selection: Working Groups include specific members elected from:

  • The Ecosystem: Validators, Partners, Builders and Researchers

  • GenLayer Labs: Core members of the technical teams

  • GenLayer Foundation

Collaboration Tools:

  • Private Discord channels for coordination

  • Open Discourse forum for presentations, project updates, reports, and open discussions

  • Initial online videocalls for getting to know one another, project setup and alignment

Recognition System:

  • Special Working Group badges in the points system

  • Extra points awarded upon project completion

  • Recognition for strategic alignment with GenLayer’s critical needs

Working Group Possibilities

We’re launching multiple Working Groups, each focused on critical areas of GenLayer’s development:

Monitoring Working Group: Keep track of Testnet Asimov health and uncover insights through Grafana dashboards, metrics analysis, and performance monitoring to directly inform development decisions.

Testing Working Group: Perform comprehensive tests to ensure stability and scalability of the testnet, including stress tests and creating new test scenarios for consensus mechanisms.

Specs Working Group: Review and refine GenLayer specifications, one area at a time.

Node Operations Working Group: Focus on validator infrastructure improvements including upgradability, failover mechanisms, and backup strategies.

Builders Working Group: Create developer tools, boilerplates in various languages, educational content, and extensions to make building on GenLayer more accessible.

Services Working Group: Develop essential infrastructure services like bridges and API integrations to connect GenLayer with external systems.

Points Working Group: Led by the Foundation, this group will work on the points system and create intelligent contracts to assign points autonomously and improve the points system infrastructure.

Join Us in Building GenLayer’s Future

Working Groups represent our commitment to building in public and engaging with GenLayer’s ecosystem to help our technical roadmap. This work directly contributes to GenLayer’s success and helps maximise efforts while empowering our community to take an active role in shaping our future.

We genuinely hope you’ll be part of this initiative and help us steer the future of GenLayer.
