The word “steward” gets thrown around in Web3 communities all the time. Usually it means: vote on proposals, show up to calls, write a few forum posts. Check the boxes, collect the governance tokens.
I want to push back on that framing — at least for GenLayer.
GenLayer is at a stage where the decisions made in the next 12 months will define the architecture of the network for years. That means stewardship here is less about rubber-stamping and more about actually shaping how an AI-native blockchain governs itself. That’s a completely novel problem. There’s no playbook.
A few things I think real stewardship looks like here:

Deep protocol literacy — not just “how do intelligent contracts work” but why the validator incentive structure is designed the way it is, and what breaks if we change it.

Community translation — most users will never read the whitepaper. Stewards bridge that gap. Explanations, threads, posts like this one.

Constructive dissent — the most valuable thing a steward can do is say “I think this proposal is wrong, and here’s why” with rigor and good faith.
I’m curious what other people in this category actually think the role means. Are we here to maintain? To build? To advocate? Some combination? Let’s figure this out together before the network matures past the point where the culture is still being formed.
